Ronald Hess, MS, DO, is a highly regarded osteopath, exercise physiologist, and board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at Beacon Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, which has three locations in Oxford, West Chester, Ohio. Dr. Hess specializes in sports medicine and knee and shoulder treatments.
Beacon Orthopedics & Sports Medicine diagnoses and treats many of the most common sports-related injuries out there. Shoulder injuries like rotator cuff tears and common knee injuries like meniscus tears and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears often need direct repairs beyond the scope of some physical therapy and bandaging.
Dr. Hess graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, with a Bachelor of Science in biology. He decided to incorporate his passion for sports into his education by pursuing a master’s degree in exercise physiology from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He then attended A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, for his Doctor of Osteopathy. He followed that up with six rigorous years of postgraduate training in orthopaedics, capped off with a sports medicine fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Florida.
As a former four-year NCAA varsity football letterman and current football and lacrosse coach, Dr. Hess has always been passionate about sports, giving him an extra edge in working with athletes. During his sports medicine fellowship, he gained invaluable experience working with professional competitors as a team physician for the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, Tampa Bay Mutiny soccer team, and Tampa Bay Storm arena football team. He’s also currently the team orthopaedic surgeon for the Miami University sports medicine program and has been the team physician for Miami University and 22 other Division 1 sports teams since 1999.
In Dr. Hess’s own words, “I know firsthand what the love of sports means to my patients. I understand the frustration of being sidelined, and I want to get them back as quickly and effectively as possible.”
